My 7 year old little boy
By Brenda G.

My 7 year old little boy is so sweet, caring, loving and funny. He is also an excellent problem solver and his whole face lights up when he smiles. You may not notice these wonderful things about him when you meet him because he has anxiety and OCD.

He gets very shy and quiet and tries to hide behind me when he meets new people or is in a crowd. Since his birth, it has been a learning process that I know will continue. I have learned that no matter how uncomfortable other people are with my little boy’s anxiety, that it isn’t about them, it’s about him and his feelings.

I have learned to allow him to feel his fear and together with encouragement and time, we get through each situation. There have been many instances where I have had to advocate and have a voice for my child in the school system. With a teacher that is understanding and kind, my son does well. With a teacher that needs a lot of education regarding our children, he does not do very well.

I fought for three long months to remove him from his first kindergarten teacher. The last day of her class were the last times he cried going to school. That says a lot! The class he was changed into had a wonderful teacher who will never be forgotten.

He is now in second grade and with the help of the guidance counselor, former teachers and vice principal, we were able to choose teachers for him that would fit his personality.

Due to his anxiety he has never been able to join any teams. This year we were able to join scouts and he is enjoying it. This little boy has taught me how to be more patient and a better parent.
